Conversation Guide for Sharing Your Story

Sharing your story outside of church—with friends, coworkers, family, or even strangers—can be a powerful way to inspire and encourage others. Your story doesn’t have to be long or complicated; it just needs to be authentic, relatable, and Christ-centered. This guide will help you naturally share how God has impacted your life.

1. Be Ready for Opportunities

  • Look for moments where your story might encourage someone.

  • Conversations about struggles, hope, or faith can be a natural lead-in.

  • Be open to the Holy Spirit prompting you to share.

2. Be Prepared

  • Think through your story in advance so you can share it naturally.

  • Write down key points or practice sharing in a concise way.

  • Have a couple of key scriptures in mind that resonate with your story.

3. Keep It Short & Relatable

  • Most conversations happen quickly, so aim for 1-2 minutes when sharing your story.

  • Focus on a key moment rather than telling your entire life story.

  • Use simple language—avoid church jargon that might confuse someone unfamiliar with faith.

4. Follow a Simple Structure

  1. Before: What was your life or situation like before God worked in it?

  2. During: What happened that changed everything? (How did you encounter Jesus or experience His power?)

  3. After: How has your life been different since then?

  4. Encouragement: What message of hope do you want to leave them with?

5. Keep It Conversational

  • Don’t make it feel like a speech—just share as part of a normal conversation.

  • Ask questions and listen to the other person’s story too.

  • Let them respond naturally rather than feeling pressured.

6. Share Scripture If It Feels Natural

  • A short verse can reinforce your story (e.g., Revelation 12:11 – "They overcame by the blood of the Lamb and the word of their testimony").

  • If they seem open, offer to pray for them or answer questions.

7. Trust God for the Results

  • Your role is to share—God is the one who moves in people’s hearts.

  • Not everyone will respond immediately, and that’s okay.

  • Keep praying for those you’ve shared with and trust that God is at work.

Example: A Simple Conversation

Coworker: "I’ve been really stressed lately. It feels like things just aren’t getting better."

You: "I understand—I’ve been through some tough times too. A few years ago, I was struggling with ____, but during that time, I really felt God step in and give me peace. It didn’t happen overnight, but trusting Him changed everything for me."

Coworker: "Wow, that’s interesting. How did that happen?"

You: "I just started praying and reading the Bible more, and I saw God answering prayers in ways I never expected. One verse that really stuck with me was _____. It reminded me that I wasn’t alone."

Coworker: "I never really thought about faith that way."

You: "Yeah, it’s been life-changing for me. If you ever want to talk more about it, I’d love to share."

Final Encouragement

You don’t need to be a preacher or have a dramatic story to make an impact. Just be authentic, kind, and open. God will use your words to reach the right people at the right time!
