Keep the Change: Elevating Our Expectations

Introduction

Christmas Gift with tag that says "God's Plans". Change of Expectation

As the Christmas season approaches, we’re reminded of the joy and hope found in Jesus Christ. At New Faith Church, this is a time to connect with God and others in love, grow in grace, and reflect on how God is calling us to fulfill our purpose.

This week’s sermon highlighted the power of elevating our expectations and embracing change as we navigate our spiritual journeys. Through the story of Zechariah and the birth of John the Baptist, we find profound lessons about faith, obedience, and the supernatural work of God.

The Story of Zechariah: A Lesson in Faith

Who Was Zechariah?

Zechariah was a priest who served faithfully in the temple, alongside his wife, Elizabeth. Although they were devout, they carried the sorrow of unanswered prayers for a child. Yet, even in the waiting, they remained connected to God and committed to their purpose.

An Encounter with the Divine

During his service in the temple, Zechariah experienced an extraordinary moment of connection with God when the angel Gabriel appeared. Gabriel delivered incredible news: Zechariah and Elizabeth would have a son, John, who would be filled with the Holy Spirit and prepare the way for Jesus. This moment reminds us that God often works in ways that far exceed our expectations.

Faith Tested and Strengthened

Despite the angel’s message, Zechariah doubted due to his and Elizabeth’s advanced age. In response, Gabriel told Zechariah he would remain mute until the prophecy was fulfilled. This silence became a period of reflection, a divine invitation for Zechariah to grow in grace by trusting God’s plan even when it seemed impossible.

Elevating Our Expectations

From Routine to Revelation

Zechariah’s story reminds us of the importance of moving beyond routines in our faith. At New Faith Church, we believe that connecting with God daily through prayer and worship is essential, but these practices should be alive with anticipation for God’s presence. Let’s transform our routines into opportunities to encounter His power and love.

The Power of Relationships

Relationships are central to God’s purpose for our lives. Zechariah and Elizabeth’s faithfulness to one another and to God positioned them to receive His promises. Similarly, we are called to build meaningful connections with others—relationships that reflect His love and bring healing and hope. Whether through fellowship, prayer, or acts of service, these relationships help us grow in grace.

Welcoming Change as Growth

Change can be challenging, but it is often the path to transformation. By elevating our expectations and trusting in God’s promises, we invite Him to work in extraordinary ways. Like Zechariah and Elizabeth, we too can find our purpose by stepping out in faith and aligning ourselves with God’s will.

Life Application

Challenge for the Week

At New Faith Church, we believe that growth happens when we embrace God’s grace and extend it to others. This week, challenge yourself to elevate your expectations and embrace change in your spiritual life:

  • Set aside time each day to connect with God through prayer and Scripture.

  • Identify one routine in your life that needs to be infused with expectancy for God’s work.

  • Take one step to deepen a relationship—with a friend, family member, or fellow believer—reflecting God’s love in a tangible way.

Questions for Reflection

  1. Are there areas in your life where you’ve settled into a routine and need to invite God’s supernatural work?

  2. How can you strengthen your relationships with God and others to reflect His love and purpose?

  3. What step can you take this week to elevate your expectations and align them with God’s will?

By reflecting on these questions and taking action, you can connect with God’s plan, grow in His grace, and discover the joy of living out your purpose in His Kingdom.

Conclusion

As we prepare for Christmas, let’s embrace the lessons of Zechariah’s story:

  • Connect: Seek God in love and build relationships that reflect His heart.

  • Grow: Trust in His promises and allow His grace to transform you.

  • Find Your Purpose: Align your expectations with God’s will and step into His calling for your life.

This season is an opportunity to experience the hope and joy that Jesus brings. Let’s walk together as a community of faith, embracing His love and sharing His healing with the world.
