You Can’t Change the World by Minding Your Own Business (Great Commission)

INTRODUCTION

If we’re honest, most of us like to “mind our own business.” But Jesus invites us into something bolder: to carry His good news into our everyday world. That’s the heartbeat of the Great Commission—and it’s the focus of our Missions Emphasis Month at New Faith Church. The call isn’t just for pastors or missionaries; it’s for every disciple who believes that Jesus really meant it when He said, “Go.” (Great Commission)

KEY MESSAGE - The great commission

In Matthew 28:18–20, Jesus declares, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me… therefore go and make disciples… and surely I am with you always.” With those words, He hands us both courage and a compass: His authority to act and His presence to sustain us. God’s mission didn’t start in Matthew; it began when He blessed Abraham to be a blessing to all nations. From Genesis to Jesus and now to us, God’s plan has always been to reach the world through His people (Great Commission).

“You can’t change the world by minding your own business.”

This memorable line from Sunday’s message captures it: faith is lovingly intrusive.

Love steps in. Love speaks up. Love serves. Love invites.

TAKEAWAYS

1) Position yourself to receive—then go

Before the disciples went, they met Jesus where He told them to be. We, too, need daily space to read Scripture, pray, and listen. When we position ourselves before God, He fills us—then sends us. (Great Commission)

Reflection: Where is your daily “meeting place” with God this week?

2) Jesus’ authority makes obedience possible

“Go” isn’t a suggestion; it’s a command. But Jesus doesn’t send us empty-handed. He says, “All authority… has been given to me.” Our confidence doesn’t rest in our eloquence or expertise. It rests in Him.

Scripture: Matthew 28:18–20

Reflection: Where do you need to lean on Jesus’ authority rather than your own ability?

3) Discipleship begins before someone believes

We often think discipleship starts after conversion. Sunday reminded us it starts earlier—when we build relationships, answer questions, and patiently walk with people toward Jesus. That takes patience and extra grace—but isn’t that how Jesus treated us?

Reflection: Who in your life needs patient, grace-filled presence from you this week?

4) We’re accountable for the mission we’ve been given

Jesus’ parables about the talents and the sheep and goats call us to faithful action. The Church can’t be passive; we’re stewards of the gospel. Faithfulness looks like everyday obedience: praying, sharing, serving, and supporting mission here and around the world.

Reflection: What’s one step of faithfulness you can take today?

APPLYING THE MESSAGE

  • Pray daily: “Lord, give me a heart for the nations—and for my neighbor.”

  • Identify three people (school, work, neighborhood, family) and ask God for an open door to listen, encourage, and share.

  • Practice a simple story: Share what Jesus means to you in 90 seconds.

  • Partner in missions: We can’t be everywhere, but we can give, pray, and encourage those who are. Consider a monthly commitment during Missions Emphasis Month.

CALL TO ACTION

This week, don’t “mind your own business”—mind the King’s business. Start the conversation. Extend the invite. Send the text. Offer to pray. Give toward missions. Jesus’ authority sends you; Jesus’ presence sustains you; Jesus’ love compels you. Let’s be the church that goes—across the street and across the world.
