Many Christians are looking for signs, but perhaps the most important signs are not the ones we seek but the ones we display. Imagine two simple signs on the church building: one over the front door reading “Break Room” and another over the main exit that says “Servant’s Entrance.” These two signs perfectly capture the attitude we should have regarding the church and the world.
The Church: A Spiritual Break Room
Too often, Christians misunderstand the role of the church. Some see it as a fortress, a place to retreat from the world’s dangers. Others view it as a spiritual spa, a sanctuary for personal pampering. Some even treat it as their own kingdom, a space to exert control, while others see it as a social club for like-minded discussions and debates.
But the church should be like a break room—a place where workers (servants) come to rest, receive nourishment, and prepare to go back to their tasks. Just as employees take a break to refuel before returning to work, believers gather at church to be spiritually fed and refreshed so they can serve effectively in the world.
The World: A Servant’s Workplace
Many Christians also have incorrect perspectives on the world. Some view it as hostile, a place of danger that requires constant defense. While spiritual warfare is real, our response should not be to cower in fear or hide away. Others treat the world as home, where they return after briefly visiting “God’s house” on Sundays.
But if the church is our break room, then the world is our workplace. When we leave church, we don’t walk through an exit; we step through a Servant’s Entrance. Our mission doesn’t end at the church doors—it begins there. We are God’s ambassadors, carrying a message of reconciliation to a lost world (2 Corinthians 5:18). Serving Christ is not just a Sunday activity—it’s a 24/7 calling.
Embracing Our Calling
No wonder we need to come to the break room once or twice a week! We need the church to refuel, recharge, and reconnect so that we can go back into the world as effective servants.
So, the next time you walk into church, imagine seeing a sign that says Break Room. Be encouraged, be nourished, and be renewed. And when you leave, picture a sign that says Servant’s Entrance. Step out with purpose, ready to serve, love, and be the hands and feet of Jesus in the world.
